Because apparently I have lost all sense of proportion
Why commit to one year-long reading challenge when you can commit to two? As well as Beat The Backlist (I mean, have you SEEN my bookshelves) I stumbled across this challenge hosted by Dani Reviews Things. It’s pretty simple to understand – read all the books in a new-to-you series every month. Not so simple to do. Especially as some of the unread series sitting on my shelves are five or more books long. And I don’t always own them all.
Well, they call it a challenge for a reason!
I almost didn’t sign up for it. On my first look at the challenge page, my immediate reaction was that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. I’ve had some pretty good reading months this year, but I’ve also had months where I’ve struggled to make four books in a month, so completing an entire series on top of the other reads I want to do… And then, series tend to come in longer, fantasy books, not the quick-and-easy contemporary reads I can bash out one a day.
But then I was going through my Goodreads TBR organising my 2018 shelves (you know you do it too) and I kept thinking, oh, I could read that series. Oh, and that one. Yes, I need to read those… And without even trying I’d come up with half the year’s series planned already. So it would be silly not to, right?
I’ve listed these by month, but that’s going to be flexible and depend on my mood. Because the challenge is for new-to-you series, it rules out several I might have added like the Great Library, Tearling, Percy Jackson, Penryn and the End of Days, and Red Queen series. Look out for those in my Beat The Backlist challenge, though, because I AM going to get through them.
Enough chat, here are the books:
- January – The Kingkiller Chronicles (Patrick Rothfuss)
- February – The Illuminae Files (Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff)
- March – The Chronicles of Warshard (Katherine Bogle)
- April – Rebel of the Sands (Alwyn Hamilton)
- May – Ember in the Ashes (Sabaa Tahir)
- June – Kingdom on Fire (Jessica Cluess)
- July – Half Bad (Sally Green)
- August – The Gentleman Bastards (Scott Lynch)
- September – Vicious and Vengeful (VE Schwab)
- October – The Star-Touched Queen (Roshani Chokshi)
- November – The Archived (VE Schwab)
- December – The Kane Chronicles (Rick Riordan)
That’s a pretty daunting TBR
Oh, you noticed! And since I don’t like to do things half-heartedly, there’s a few other series I might add to the list if I can get my hands on all the books. Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard, Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin are all sitting forlornly on my shelves waiting for their sequels to catch up with them. And then there’s the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness, which I own all three books of but somehow forgot when I was writing up my TBR.
